Rights Respecting School Award
Respecting School Award recognises schools that put the Convention on the Rights of the Child at the centre of their school ethos and planning.
“The RRSA recognises achievement in putting the Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. By taking these steps a school community helps improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their potential. A rights- respecting school not only teaches about child rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers/adults and children, between adults, and between children.” UNICEF, 2013
Featherstone Nursery School received it’s Recognition of Commitment to the scheme in October 2015 and we are really pleased that we achieved Level One of the Award on the 4th July 2017.
A steering group of governors, parents, staff and children has been set up which will work together to ensure that the values continue to be reflected in our school vision and become central to our school’s ethos. If you would like to be part of this steering group please ask for information.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child consists of 54 articles. A ‘child’ is defined as every human being below the age of 18. The key provisions are:
The right to a childhood
The right to be educated
The right to be healthy
The right to be treated fairly
The right to be heard
The right to be safe
By learning about the Convention where possible our children can discover that:
They have rights
They should be informed about their rights
They should be helped to exercise their rights
They should be able to enforce their rights
There should be a community of interest to advocate young people’s rights
The Convention will also underpin how staff and children behave to each other and how we behave as a school community.
